Poem-A-Week

Palestine Rises
Aseil Abu-Baker

Bloom, Blossom, Rise

Out of graves.

Rise
Rise
Rise

From the land planted in their hearts
They crawl out triumphant and reclaim.

The day of judgment

We join hands and stomp our feet in unison
The dabkeh of our dreams
Lifting the earth beneath us
Re-arranging our land in her natural order.

(dabkeh: traditional Palestinian dance)

Aseil is a Palestinian-Syrian-American lawyer and advocate working on human rights issues in the SWANA region. She's a newly aspiring word weaver whose journey with words has been one of personal location and liberation. Her Palestinian/Syrian roots and a commitment to a singular vision of justice, inform and fuel her work and her words.
